Because a society that does not care for and protect its animals and its ecosystem is in decline. The fatality of its own extinction, is that what we want as humanity for ourselves and the animals?
We must create institutions and Laws that protect these innocent beings, let us take care of and support having good care and respect is the right of all even if the animals do not speak they would say and I do not matter.
