Stop selling live lobsters

Addressed to: Government of Belgium

Supermarkets have been selling live lobsters and other marine life for years. In other words, if people ask for something, they get it. So, let's get what we ask for! Selling live marine animals is unethical, horrible, and unnecessary!

They huddle together when they are numerous, some die of hunger, of dehydration, we put the pliers on them, so that they cannot "fight each other", but above all so that they are defenseless, thus remaining safe for those who want to catch them.

We see these animals trying to escape, through the windows, trying to climb.

We must stop such practices, especially since the fate of these animals is in the hands of the consumer, who can put them in boiling water to agonize for long minutes before dying.

This must end.

Studies have confirmed that lobsters in neglected aquariums often succumb to hunger, dehydration, heat, or fights with other marine animals. During transportation and storage, they suffer from dehydration, bacterial redstart disease, tail disease, and crash disease caused by extremely crowded conditions. Handling marine animals, including litter, causes open wounds and injuries. They also suffer from the inability to properly breathe air, resulting in acidosis and accumulation of toxins. A Canadian study found that 19% of lobsters lost their claws when they reached factories and packing stations.

They are unique and fascinating animals that lack the automated nervous system to shock them when injured. Thus, marine biologists theorize that lobsters, like other marine animals, feel pain every second it is inflicted on them before they die.

Marine animals are extremely social and use signals to communicate with each other.

I urge you to stop the cruel and unnecessary sale of lobsters and other marine animals that live in your supermarkets and affiliates.
