Addressed to: Federal and State Governments of Mexico and Chiapas
The Lagunas de Montebello National Park in Chiapas has an area of 6,425 hectares where diverse manifestations of nature converge, such as the famous lakes of different sizes, shapes and depths that offer a variety of colors that has given them global appeal. Unfortunately, pollution and lack of interest from the authorities are putting an end to this wonder of nature. That is why we asked the Secretary of Infrastructure and Communications of Chiapas, Arch. Bayardo Robles Riqué, to intervene so that the budget of 133 million pesos to solve the problem is in effect destined to the treatment of the waste water that flows into the lagoons, and that the population be informed in a timely manner of the works that will be carried out to achieve the definitive solution of this delicate problem.
The National Park belongs to the Rio Grande-Lagunas basin of Montebello that shares with the municipalities of La Independencia, Comitán, La Trinitaria, Las Margaritas and Nentón, Guatemala. The park, created by presidential decree in 1959, was recognized RAMSAR site as a wetland of international importance. In 2009 the park was recognized by UNESCO as the RMBR (World Network of Biosphere Reserves). It is considered as an ecosystem within the context of sustainable development for the benefit of humanity.
Unfortunately since 2003, the lakes have suffered the discoloration of their waters, as well as the saturation of foul odors. These phenomena have been studied by noted scientists. Their conclusion is that these are caused by several factors, among which are the wastewater discharges, mainly from the city of Comitán, as well as the abuse of agrochemicals of high toxicity by farmers in the region.
For more than 10 years have been the eyes of different government agencies and, to date, nothing or very little has been done to restore these lakes to their original beauty. Today it is known that the government has allocated 133 million pesos to solve the problem of these waters that discharge in the bed of the Grande River which ends in one of the lagoons. There is vague knowledge that two companies are working to set up treatment plants. However, in the village there is a total ignorance of what is being done and if such a budget will have full application to the purpose for which it is said to be destined.
That is why we ask that the budget be allocated to the treatment of wastewater, and that the authorities inform the population in a timely manner about the works being carried out. Otherwise, this natural heritage of Mexico will be lost.
