An African elephant from the Caricuao Zoo (west of Caracas) is the recent icon of a Venezuela in crisis. The calvary of Ruperta, the pachyderm of 45 years, has been known thanks to a series of photographs published in social networks: bony to the extreme, fallen and lonely. Thus, in several images, the tribulation of animals has also been exemplified in an oil country in the middle of an economic decline.
The drama of this elephant has raised a legion in their support. Even Paris Jackson, the daughter of pop singer Michael Jackson, has been in solidarity with Ruperta. "This is inhuman and exasperating. Spread (information) to help these beautiful creatures deserve a better life", he wrote in her Twitter account.
