Prohibit trafficking of donkey leather exported from Africa to China for its traditional medicine

Addressed to: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law

Since the 1990s, the population of donkeys in China has been cut in half. The country has set its sights on Africa to meet its needs, which in turn remain stable. If hunting rhinos or elephants cause a stir, the slaughter of the donkeys is more discreet but equally criminal and illegal. Donkey owners are worried about illegal traffic and do not dare to leave their animals to nature, for fear that they will disappear. Donkeys are stolen and murdered without any delicacy, with a dagger, or beaten to death, or skinned alive.

A lucrative market

In 2014, a donkey cost € 30. In 2017, they are worth about 150! The sum represents a quarter of the salary in South Africa, the country most affected by poaching fur. It must be said that China is the biggest consumer of this product. Traditional medicine recommends donkey skin gelatin to fight against anemia, insomnia and menopause.

Senegal, Mali and Niger have banned the export of donkeys to Asia, but Botswana and Kenya allow it. In 5 years, the donkey could disappear completely in Burkina Faso, despite its daily usefulness and indispensable for the majority of the residents. Farmers and donkey owners mourn the indifference of the authorities.

The donkey, essential for Africa

In Africa, the donkey is a draft animal that is used daily. Owning a donkey makes it possible to pull cars in which the poor villagers accumulate waste wood and sand that they are going to sell. Ikgopeleng Tsietsoane 25 years old and owner of donkeys in Mogosani, South Africa, explains: "Jobs are scarce here, donkeys are a source of income. If you have one, you can save your life."

It is a shame!!!!!!
