Every year, the first day of February, as the beginning of the festivities in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria (patron saint), the do what they call the "RESERVOIR OF BULLS".
The six zebu bulls must cross the mighty river Papaloapan, meanwhile they are tied to the side of a canoe (small boat) in the water, only the head out of the water. Previously each bull on the other side of the river, has been drunk, because you have got to muzzle the contents of a bottle of brandy (pure cane liquor).
One by one come to the river bank where is that city and there, expect a crowd of people who have come from various parts of the state, the country and abroad. The pseudo-drunk cowboys start to tide the bulls and near-drowning, are also now semi-paralyzed by the cords, people start giving harass kicks, hit them with their belts, to wring its tail; all it intended to infuriate them to charge, because as the animals are not fighting, but grazing.
Because of its strength, the bulls are able to release some strings (not all) and begin to flee through the streets, because here contrary to what happens in Pamplona, they are the ones who are afraid of the people. Note that this day of "La Candelaria", the liquor flows freely, it can be said that all the participants to "party" are drunk; therefore, there is no control and this situation continues throughout the remainder of the day (the crossing of the bulls through the river starts at noon), in most cases, the bulls are MAIMED their genitals and the tail, are stung with sharp objects and so this barbarism continues until fall through the city streets, dying or DEAD.
At the end they are collected with a machine from the City Hall and later take to the trail, where they eventually kill them (those who survived), they butcher them and sell their meat at the butcher next day. It should be mentioned that all the expense of buying bulls and the same party, is sponsored by the municipal government, with the backing of the state government of Veracruz.
