Prohibit spherical fish tanks for goldfish

In almost all pet stores a spherical fish tank with goldfish is offered that is not absolutely adapted to the needs of the fish, as it has irreversible consequences on the body of the fish, causing dwarfism.

Yesterday I visited the aquarium in Paris and took a goldfish to its refuge.

By having a 100-liter aquarium with two 6-month-old Asians, a lion's head and a telescope, I had a brief talk with the biologist who took charge of public relations. I intend to move to 200 or 300 liters soon, and I asked about the famous "space" of dwarfism. To my surprise, she told me that this topic of dwarfism is controversial.

In summary, the size of the goldfish is adapted to that of the fish tank, without necessarily being pathological.

I do not speak, obviously, jars to proscribe, not even 50 l aquariums in which theoretically we can not place a solitary goldfish (not good). but:

1. Common or Asian goldfish do not come from a natural evolution. They are the product of human selection, initially in the outer basin, no doubt. Therefore, a dwarf that does not reach more than 15 cm is not necessarily affected by pathological dwarfism. As can be seen in the natural environment, fish of the same species can reach very different sizes and behaviors if they inhabit a small river or a large river.

2. We admit the famous rule of 50 l. minimum per common goldfish (according to some it is ideally 100 l). This is common sense for a fish up to 30 cm.

My concern is, above all, the welfare of the animals, and I apply the advice on this site. My question is not simply ethical: the scientific community apparently is not unanimous. And regarding the pathology of public relations whose size stagnates in an aquarium too small, contrary to the growth of internal organs (which cause suffering and death), I found no biological explanation on the web. Of course, there is a history and a millenary experience, but there is no theory that I know of.
