El Musel disperses highly polluting clinker, by the West Zone of Gijón. The clinker is a compound used in the manufacture of Portland cement, and must be transported in enclosed compartments, but El Musel has been harboring heaps over the past few days even though it is extremely toxic when it releases dust clouds, and consequently must be charged , transported and unloaded in hermetic compartments that prevent them from generating them, or at least covering themselves with tarpaulins.
Neighbors in the Gijon neighborhoods of Jove and La Calzada complain about the amount of dust found in their homes and on their cars, and say that the neighborhoods are heavily contaminated by this product.
Overexposure to the Portland cement clinker can cause serious and potentially irreversible damage to the skin or eyes in the form of chemical (caustic) burns, including third degree burns. The same severe injury may occur on prolonged contact with wet or moisturized skin.
The Ecologist Coordinator of Asturias has been denouncing for some time that El Musel is “a real strainer”. Fruti Pontigo, coordinator of the platform, denounces that “while Avilés has been spending a lot of money on security measures such as screens, asphalt, automatic irrigation, etc., Gijón has hardly begun to do so.”
We urgently need a response from the authorities to control the transport of clinker and the Gijoneses do not end with serious health problems.
