Both our native grey & common/harbour seals are protected in Law against any disturbance during their breeding 'pupping' season, but outside of this, they are not subject to any wildlife acts and are regularly harassed by the public and dogs when they get too close to them.
Dog walkers have allow their dogs to attack seals on the beach and have caused adults to crush pups in an attempt the escape into the sea. Members of the public have put themselves and their children at risk from a bite, by getting close enough to have a photograph taken and even putting children upon the backs of seals.
Volunteers who patrol the beaches around Great Britain have no power to stop this as it is not an offence in Law and this leaves all at risk. Stressing out wild animals by idiotic behaviour needs to be unlawful and wild animals need protection from people.
