Do not allow a landfill in the World Biosphere Reserve Torres del Paine

Addressed to: ONU and 2 more

They want to create a landfill to deposit the waste of salmon farming in it. That would be disastrous. How do you think to allow such a thing?

Only 15 km from the Torres del Paine World Biosphere Reserve was approved a landfill of organic and chemical residues from salmon farming of the Hollemberg River fish farms. This project will affect one of the most valuable biodiversity areas in the world, part of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Program.

This project had the express approval of the Environmental Assessment Commission of the Chilean Magellan and Antarctic Region, so we ask that we reverse the situation and analyze the problems that this may bring to the whole region.

This initiative involves the transport of 30-50 tonnes of sludge daily through trucks, and then deposited 100,000 liters per hectare in the prairies by spraying. The sludge will come from the cleaning of the recirculation water of the fish farms.

One of the immediate impacts for the social and economic life of the inhabitants of the province of Ultima Esperanza will be derived from the traffic of trucks that will use the same route through which thousands of national and international tourists circulate during the high season of visits.

Local farmers and farmers are concerned about potential impacts such as chlorine and heavy metal contamination of surface water bodies.

We do not want our Patagonia to be the dump of any company. We want a clean and clear Patagonia for the enjoyment of all of us and of future generations.
