Every year millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as feral animals. These high numbers are the result of unplanned breeding that may have been prevented by spaying or neutering.
Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats.
Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.
Stray animals present a real problem in various parts of the country. They can live off wildlife, cause car accidents, harm local wildlife, and scare children. Spaying and neutering is a powerful weapon to reduce the number of animals on the streets. In addition, in Colombia we live with intolerant people, with a lack of culture and education, so there are intolerant people who hurt and kill street animals and even those that have an owner.
In Colombia there may be more than a million stray dogs. Studies highlight that in Bogotá for every 100 housed dogs, another 38 roam the streets. Recent studies by the University of La Salle revealed that there may be more than a million stray dogs in Colombia.
Allowing your pet to have babies when you don't intend to breed them is not a good lesson for your children, especially when too many unwanted animals end up in shelters.
