Like every year in China, thousands of cats and dogs are slaughtered to celebrate the summer solstice. A custom that has existed since the 1990s, to the chagrin of animal protection activists. Tradition says that dog meat, accompanied by lychees and strong alcohol, brings good luck and health for the rest of the year.
