Dog tether Laws

Addressed to: Government of Alberta and 3 more

Dogs in Alberta have no protection under the Law from owners who tether or chain their dogs with no respite. These dogs are kept on a short chain 24/7/365. The SPCA have deemed this practice as within their guidelines.

More and more cities and provinces are changing the Law to allow dogs to be chained/tethered for a period of time, some Laws state the dogs can only be on a tether for only a couple hours a day. Dog owners, particularly mixed breeds such as wolf dogs, require exercise, freedom from boredom that chaining does not allow.

I have watched a wolf dog suffer like this for more than 3 years in my town, the owner has done this in other locations with this animal. This practice allows for all kinds of suffering, these animals have no human or animal interaction, they are vulnerable to attacks when they can't flee their tether. The madness of this kind of cruelty is barbaric. Often they have no ability to find shelter or shade.

This needs changing, I have plead with the government and the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to implement a Law, they thus far have shown no interest.
