Cruelty: Brazilian Army tortures and kills a rabbit. Images are extremely violent and show a soldier, coerced by superiors, killing a rabbit to thwack to eat their eyes.
Abuses committed by the Brazilian Army against the animal came to light through a video. The recording was made in Porto Velho (RO), during a survival training in the jungle. "I want to see the eye of this rabbit jump out", orders a military. He instructs the young man to hold the animal with one hand and to strike with the other. By hesitating, the soldier is ridiculed and coerced to act. "You're afraid to hurt the rabbit? Are you sorry? single blow, just walk," says one of the top, while another mocks:". Why you're trembling?" The rabbit is finally hit with a blow to the head, which makes their eyes pop. The military cut the animal's eyes immediately and force the soldier to eat, congratulating him. The rabbit is still alive, dying. Watch the video report in the TV-SP Network. "It is a technique of extreme violence against a helpless animal," laments Rosangela Ribeiro, veterinary program manager of the World Animal Protection. For her, "the scenes show an incitement to violence and sadism, which does not fit into a public institution."
Letter to Ministry
On Thursday (30), the World Animal Protection sent a letter to Minister Jaques Wagner, requesting that the Ministry of Defence narrow the case and ensure the ethical treatment of animals in all Brazilian institutions. "We know that animals are sentient beings, are protected by the state and have rights," recalls Rosangela Ribeiro, "it is up to us to reassure them."
Military Authorities
The case is being investigated by a military inquiry, which recognized the authenticity of the images and reported that they were recorded in June this year. In a statement, they said that soldiers are frequently subjected to tests to learn how to get food from nature. According to the army high command, however, the behavior of the military in the video does not match the standards of the institution. "Torturing and killing an animal that way configures mistreatment," criticizes Rosangela Ribeiro, citing the law of environmental crimes. According to Article 32 of Federal Law No. 9605/98, performs an act of abuse, injure or mutilate wild, domestic or domesticated, native or exotic is crime.
